When the first Europeans, William Gilbert Rees and his partners, started to explore the Wakatipu District in the early 1860's, they never imagined that they would discover a land as amazing as the Head of the Lake.
The small settlement of Glenorchy sits on the far Northern shore of Lake Wakatipu and holds a passage into the Mt Aspiring National Park, as well as a way into the magical land of "Middle Earth" featured in the epic trilogy movie "The Lord of the Rings".
Mountainland Rovers will take you from the township into the beautiful Rees Valley. Dick Watson loves nothing better than showing visitors his piece of Paradise, with off-road tours to some of the remotest and prettiest parts of New Zealand's South Island.
With a variety of tours available there is something for everyone, from the infamous Lord of the Rings locations to something a little more 'off the beaten track' - and more personal. Refreshments provided - Billy Tea/Coffee & Mountain Cake.
